A rec coordinator ordering for a fall program is buying for four age bands at once: the four and unders who are only there because a sibling is, the five to seven group, the eight to ten group, and the middle schoolers who are too cool for it. One order, four different audiences.
Sports novelties are not one size fits all, and the mismatch shows up fast. Give a preschooler something with a small part and you have a safety problem. Give a sixth grader a rubber duck and you have a different problem.
Under three, and the small parts line
Almost every small sports novelty here carries an ages 3 and up rating, and that rating is not decorative. Five to seven, where sports novelties actually land best
This is the sweet spot. Kids this age want the object to look like the real thing and do not care that it is four inches.

Eleven and up, where less is more
Older players do not want a favor bag. They want one thing that reads as real.
Medals still work here if the event was actually competitive. Olympic Style Gold Medals are a 1.5 inch plastic disc on a 28 inch cloth ribbon printed both sides. - Under 3: nothing small, nothing latex, nothing unsupervised.
- 5 to 7: realistic looking, soft, four inches or bigger.

- 11 and up: one item, and make it a real award or nothing.
