The school carnival committee has a gym, six folding tables, and a theme somebody picked in May. If that theme is sports, you are in luck. Sports booths are the easiest kind to build, because the mechanics already exist and everybody knows the rules.
The trap is buying decorative sports items and realizing on setup day that nothing you ordered can be thrown at anything. Sports themed carnival booths live or die on whether the ball is the right weight for the target.
Match the ball to the booth, not to the theme
Knockdown booths need mass. Rubber Baseballs are 2 3/4 inches and 4.25 ounces, enough to actually topple a stack of cans or bottles. Foam will not do it, and the fastest way to kill a booth is to have kids hit the target and watch nothing happen.
Toss into a container booths need the opposite. Plastic Golf Balls are 1.5 inches, hollow plastic, so they will not crack a bucket or bounce back into a face. Foam Balls at 2 1/2 inches are the soft option for anything with a hoop.
Floating pick games need the right duck. Sports Design Ducks are vinyl, roughly 1 3/4 by 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches, in football, baseball, soccer, and basketball patterns. The 2 Inch Sport Duck runs 2 1/4 by 2 by 2 1/4 inches. Both float, though neither is weighted to float upright, worth knowing before you number the bottoms.
Five sports themed carnival booths that work
Field goal flick. Finger Football Sets assemble to 6 1/2 inches tall with a 2 3/4 inch ball, a base, and a goal post. Three sets on a table, three attempts each. Almost no floor space, and the only booth here a volunteer can staff sitting down.
Softball toss. Plastic Softballs are 3.5 inches in assorted primary colors, twelve to a pack. Big enough to see in a crowded gym, light enough for indoors. Buckets at three distances.
Bottle knockdown. Rubber Baseballs, three throws, a pyramid. Old booth, still the longest line at every carnival.
Duck pond. A kiddie pool, a couple dozen sport ducks, numbers on the bottoms. Your under five booth, with no losing outcome, which matters when a four year old has waited ten minutes.
Mini golf hole. The Golf Set includes three plastic clubs at 22 inches, two tees, three balls, and a target with a flag. One set is one hole. Three sets is a hallway course.

The booth to skip
Do not build a free throw booth unless you have a real hoop and a real ball. Two setup details volunteers miss
Ball return. Every throwing booth needs a way to get balls back without a volunteer walking the floor. A tarp behind the target with a lip, or a table against a wall, saves more staff time than anything else.
Age separation. Bouncy balls and anything in the 27mm to 45mm range are small parts and a choking hazard for children under three, and a carnival always has toddlers in strollers at knee height. Keep those prizes behind the table and handed out by an adult rather than in a self serve bin, and keep latex punch balls away from the youngest kids for the same reason.
