Field day is the one event where every prize you hand out gets stress tested in the same four hours. Dropped in wet grass. Stepped on. Jammed in a pocket. Carried across a soccer field by a second grader who is already holding a water bottle, a popsicle stick, and somebody else's shoe.
Most field day prize regrets are material problems, not budget problems. You bought the right quantity of the wrong thing.
What sun and grass actually do to a prize table
Paper is finished the second a cooler tips or the sprinklers cycle. Cardstock ribbons curl. Glued labels peel in the heat. What survives outside is molded plastic, vinyl, rubber, and foam with a skin on it.
Metal Whistles with Lanyards are a good example. Metal, 1.75 inches long, rated ages 3 and up. Sun and mud do nothing to them. The catch is obvious: you have just armed a field with whistles. Give them to station volunteers, or hold them for the very end of the day.
Sports Pouch Keychains hold up the same way. Two inches wide, vinyl, zippered, in football, baseball, soccer, and basketball designs. They clip to a backpack and they do not care about being sat on.
Medals are better field day prizes than ribbons
Ribbons look great in the box and terrible by 2pm. A plastic disc on a cloth ribbon holds its shape, dries out, and does not crease.
Two options do most of the work here. Olympic Style Gold Medals run 1.5 inches in diameter with a 28 inch red, white, and blue cloth ribbon and Olympic style printing on both sides. Winner Medals use the same 1.5 inch plastic disc with a 24 inch ribbon, the word winner on one face and a star on the other. Printing on both faces matters more than it sounds like, because medals flip constantly and a blank back reads as an afterthought.
Here's the opinion part. For elementary field day, skip the gold, silver, and bronze tiering unless your event is genuinely scored. Sorting several hundred kids into three ranks creates an argument your volunteers are not equipped to referee. One design, handed to everyone who finishes, moves the line.
Balls, because kids play with field day prizes immediately
Nobody pockets a ball. It gets thrown before the kid reaches the next station, so it needs an outdoor surface.

Bare foam without a covering is the thing to leave off an outdoor table. Foam Balls, 2 1/2 inches of soft foam, are genuinely good in a gym. Outside they drink up dew and stay soggy all day.
Sorting the table before volunteers arrive
- Wearables (medals, bead necklaces) go at the exit, not the middle, or kids stop moving.
- Anything that bounces goes to a staffed station, never an open grab bin on grass.

The safety two minutes

Field day means younger siblings on the sidelines, so keep those at a staffed station rather than a self serve bowl. Same caution on latex punch balls: latex is an allergy issue for some kids, and uninflated or broken balloon material is a serious choking risk for the youngest ones on the field.
